In the Bradley Method class, we have learned about various stretches and exercises to help with flexibility and muscle toning, but here is some additional valuable information about another kind of stretch... the perineum, which can help you avoid a tear or episiotomy.
The perineum is the tissue down below between the v (word not written out so that internet content is not flagged as inappropriate) and the a (again, word not written out) that stretches during birth when the baby is crowning and coming through the pelvic outlet. Ideally, you would start this type of regimen about 6 weeks before your EDD (estimated due date) either performed by the pregnant mom on herself or by her partner. It can also be performed by the nurse, midwife or doctor during the actual birth. Click here to read more about how perineum massage can help and how to do it. Thanks to my awesome couple, Athaliah & Jeff, for bringing this handout to my attention!
